Prophet Prophet Elisha

Elisha, son of Shaphat, came from Abel-Meholah near the Jordan. He was called to prophetic service while plowing with twelve yoke of oxen: Elijah, passing by, cast his mantle upon him — a wordless summons Elisha immediately obeyed, slaughtering his oxen for a farewell feast with the people before following his master. He served Elijah until the elder prophet's fiery ascension to heaven, having asked for "a double portion" of his spirit; a fiery chariot separated them, and Elisha received Elijah's mantle and prophetic power, becoming his acknowledged successor.

Elisha performed more miracles than any other Old Testament righteous figure. Immediately after Elijah's ascension, he struck the Jordan with the mantle and parted its waters. He purified the poisoned spring at Jericho with salt, multiplied a poor widow's oil to pay off her debts and save her sons from slavery, and raised the dead son of the Shunammite woman. He healed Naaman, commander of the Syrian army, of leprosy by having him bathe seven times in the Jordan, while his own servant Gehazi was struck with the disease for deceitfully taking payment. Other miracles include a lost axe-head made to float, feeding a hundred men with twenty barley loaves, and neutralizing a pot of poisonous stew. He served as prophet-advisor to several kings of Israel over several decades and anointed Jehu as king. Even in death his power endured: a corpse thrown into his tomb touched his bones and came back to life.
