Righteous Joshua Son of Nun

CRITICAL: category corrected from "prophet" to "righteous" — Orthodox sources explicitly state that "unlike Moses, he was not a prophet, but a religious leader"; Azbyka.ru itself titles its article on him "Joshua son of Nun, Forefather."

The righteous Joshua, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim, was the closest attendant and successor of the Prophet Moses. While Moses still lived, Joshua was one of the twelve spies sent to scout the land of Canaan, and together with Caleb urged the people not to fear entering it. After Moses's death, the Lord appointed Joshua leader of Israel.

At his prayer the waters of the Jordan parted, and the people crossed on dry ground; during the siege of Jericho, priests carried the Ark of the Covenant around the city for seven days as God commanded, and on the seventh day, at the sound of trumpets, the city's walls collapsed. In the battle at Gibeon, Joshua prayed and the sun and moon stood still until the people had avenged themselves on their enemies. The Archangel Michael, Commander of the Host of the Lord, appeared to him, promising divine aid (Joshua 5:13–15).

Having conquered the promised land, Joshua divided it among the twelve tribes of Israel and charged the people to keep the Law of Moses. He died at the age of 110 and was buried in his inheritance at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim.
