Hierarch St. Prosper, Bishop of Orléans

CRITICAL: date corrected — the previous record "June 25" coincided with the date of a different Prosper (of Aquitaine) and appears to have been a copy-paste contamination; the correct date, per the Roman Martyrology (nominis.cef.fr: "At Orléans, in the 5th century, Saint Prosper, bishop"), is July 16/29.

St. Prosper became Bishop of Orléans in 453, succeeding St. Aignan (Anianus), the bishop famous for rallying the city against Attila's Huns two years earlier. Little detail survives about his nearly decade-long episcopate beyond his inclusion in the authenticated fifth-century succession list of Orléans bishops.

Tradition holds that he formally received St. Genevieve of Paris when she passed through Orléans during her travels — a detail placing him within the same devout Gallo-Roman ecclesiastical circle as Genevieve and St. Germanus of Auxerre. He governed the see through the turbulent final decades of Roman Gaul, as barbarian kingdoms consolidated power in the region, and died in office around 463. He was succeeded by St. Monitor.
