Righteous
Righteous Saint Pudentiana of Rome
I–II вв.
Also known as: Потенциана
Righteous Pudentiana of Rome — a virgin, elder daughter of Apostle Pudens of the Seventy and sister of Righteous Praxedes, who devoted her life to aiding persecuted Christians and burying martyrs; one of the oldest basilicas in Rome, Santa Pudenziana, bears her name.
CRITICAL: category corrected from "martyr" to "righteous" — following the same pattern as her sister Righteous Praxedes (see the separate praxedes card): the Roman Martyrology's own entry describes her death in the language of a peaceful passing ("after numberless tribulations... departed from this world to go to Heaven"), not a violent execution; the tradition that she was put to death for refusing to worship the emperors is a late accretion unsupported by earlier sources. A New Style date (June 1) has been added, previously missing.
Pudentiana was an early Christian virgin, traditionally the elder daughter of the Roman senator Pudens (Apostle of the Seventy, "a friend of the Apostles" and disciple of St. Paul, named in 2 Timothy 4:21) and elder sister of Righteous Praxedes. Their father's house in Rome served as a gathering place for the early Christian community and, by tradition, as the site where the Apostle Peter himself celebrated the sacred services.
After their father's death, the sisters distributed their inherited wealth to the poor and devoted themselves to works of mercy: seeking out and sheltering persecuted Christians, supplying their needs, and reverently burying the bodies of martyrs. She was buried beside her father in the Catacombs of Priscilla.
Her name is attached to one of the oldest churches in Rome, the Basilica of Santa Pudenziana on the Esquiline Hill, famous for its 4th-century apse mosaic of Christ enthroned among the Apostles — among the earliest surviving Christian mosaic ensembles.
