Foremother Sarah — wife of the patriarch Abraham, the first of the four foremothers of the Hebrew people, who bore Isaac in old age by God's promise.
Sarah was the wife of the Old Testament patriarch Abraham and the first of the four foremothers of the Hebrew people. Originally named Sarai ("my princess"), she accompanied Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees to Canaan. Renowned for her beauty, she was twice presented by Abraham as his sister to protect him from danger, in Egypt and later in Gerar before King Abimelech.
Barren for decades, she conceived in old age after the Lord's promise to Abraham at the oak of Mamre, delivered by three visitors, and at ninety bore Isaac, forefather of the chosen people. At the giving of this promise her name changed from Sarai to Sarah ("mother of multitudes").
She died at 127 in Hebron; Abraham purchased the cave of Machpelah as her burial place, later the patriarchs' family tomb. Paul cites her as an example of living faith (Heb 11:11) and a figure of the heavenly Jerusalem (Gal 4:22–31); Peter holds up her obedience to Abraham as a model for Christian wives (1 Pet 3:6).
