Hierarch Saint Rusticus of Narbonne

Saint Rusticus of Narbonne was Bishop of Narbonne in Roman Gaul (present-day southern France), son of Bishop Bonosus. As a young man he studied in Rome, then withdrew to Lérins Abbey and was ordained at Marseille; he became Bishop of Narbonne around 427–430.

He attended the Third Ecumenical (First) Council of Ephesus in 431, which condemned Nestorianism, and later a synod of 44 bishops (c. 451) on the same matter. He corresponded with Pope Leo the Great on questions of church discipline (several letters survive, c. 452–458). He weathered the Visigothic Arian siege of Narbonne in 436, and between 444–448 rebuilt the church of St. Genès of Arles, which had burned in 441.

He died on October 26, 461, and was succeeded by Bishop Hermes. No source gives a reliable birth year.
