Venerable Venerable Sabbas the Sanctified

Venerable Sabbas the Sanctified — founder of the Great Lavra in the Judean Desert, compiler of the first Jerusalem Typikon.
St. Sabbas the Sanctified (439–532), the greatest father of Palestinian monasticism, founded the Great Lavra (Mar Saba) in the Judean Desert. Born in Cappadocia, he entered monastic life at age eight, later trained under Sts. Euthymius the Great and Theoctistus.
He founded several monasteries, headed the Palestinian hermits, opposed Monophysitism and Origenism, and twice visited Constantinople on church business. He composed the first Jerusalem Typikon, foundational to Orthodox liturgical practice.
He reposed in 532 at his Lavra. His feast is kept December 5/18.
