Venerable Venerable Ammon the Diligent, Recluse of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Ammon, Recluse of the Far Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra, lived in the second half of the 13th century. With his abbot's blessing he made pilgrimage to Mount Athos and Jerusalem; on his return to the Lavra his piety impressed even the senior elders, and his diligence earned him the epithet "the Diligent."

In his final years he shut himself in one of the Far Caves, living in unceasing prayer until his death. He is buried in the Far Caves and venerated among the Synaxis of the Fathers of the Far Caves; a formal commemoration of the Far Caves ascetics was established in the 17th century by Metropolitan Varlaam (Yasinsky) of Kiev. He is commemorated August 28/September 10 (with the Synaxis of the Far Caves fathers) and on the 2nd Sunday of Great Lent.
