Hierarch Saint Eucherius of Lyon

Saint Eucherius of Lyon — bishop and ascetic writer, author of "In Praise of the Desert," father of two future bishops.
Saint Eucherius of Lyon (c. 380 – c. 449) was Bishop of Lyon and an ascetic writer. Born into a noble Gallo-Roman family, he was married with two sons, Salonius and Veranus, both later bishops. Around 422, with his wife's consent, he withdrew to the monastery of Lérins and then lived as a hermit on a nearby island.
There he composed influential ascetic letters — notably to his kinsman Valerian — urging withdrawal from the world. Around 434–435 he was elected Bishop of Lyon; he attended the Council of Orange (441). He authored "In Praise of the Desert" and a manual on allegorical scriptural interpretation.
He died around 449; his son Veranus succeeded him as bishop. Venerated as a saint in both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
