Hierarch Saint Gabriel (in schema Gregory), Archbishop of Novgorod

St. Gabriel (baptismal name Gabriel Nikolayevich; took the schema-name Gregory shortly before death), Archbishop of Novgorod (consecrated March 29, 1187 – †May 24, 1193), was the younger brother and successor of St. John (Ilia), Archbishop of Novgorod. Born into a noble, pious, and wealthy Novgorod family, the brothers used their inheritance to found the Annunciation Monastery on Lake Myachino.

He was consecrated in Kiev by Metropolitan Nikephoros II and arrived in Novgorod on May 31, 1187. He continued his brother's program of stone church-building and governed the see peacefully, staying clear of political strife.

He died in 1193 and was buried in St. Sophia Cathedral beside his brother; his relics were uncovered in 1558. Local veneration was established by Archbishop Euthymius II in 1439; he was included in the Synaxis of Novgorod Saints.
