Hierarch Saint Gury (Rugotin), Archbishop of Kazan

Saint Gury (born Grigory Rugotin, c. 1500, Radonezh) served as steward to the Penkov princes before being falsely accused and imprisoned for nearly two years, during which he wrote a children's alphabet primer and deepened his spiritual life. After release he was tonsured at the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery (1543), later becoming its abbot, then head of Selizharovo Trinity Monastery.

On 3 February 1555 he was consecrated the first Archbishop of the newly created Kazan and Sviyazhsk diocese, established to evangelize the recently conquered Khanate of Kazan. In eight years as archbishop he founded several monasteries, built the Annunciation Cathedral in the Kazan Kremlin, and promoted education and baptism of Tatars, Chuvash, and other Volga peoples.

Gravely ill in 1561, he received the great schema and reposed 5 December 1563. In 1595 his relics were found incorrupt together with St. Barsanuphius's. Venerated as one of the three Kazan Wonderworkers, alongside Sts. German and Barsanuphius.
