Venerable Venerable John (Ivan) of Rila

Venerable John (Ivan) of Rila is the greatest saint of the Bulgarian people, founder of Rila Monastery, and heavenly patron of Bulgaria. Born c. 876–880 in the village of Skrino at the foot of Mount Osogovo, he worked as a shepherd in his youth, later was ordained, then renounced the world for ascetic solitude, withdrawing into the Rila Mountains where he lived in a cave devoted to fasting and prayer.

Renowned for miracles and spiritual discernment, he attracted disciples whose community grew into Rila Monastery, now Bulgaria's foremost spiritual center. Tsar Peter I of Bulgaria travelled roughly 450 km seeking his blessing, but the saint, avoiding vainglory, declined a personal meeting and corresponded instead. Before his death he composed a spiritual Testament, a moral exhortation to his monks and to the Bulgarian people.

He reposed on August 18, 946. His relics, found incorrupt, were translated several times (to Sredets, then Tarnovo) before returning permanently to Rila Monastery in 1469, where they remain venerated today.
