Hierarch Saint Macarius (Nevsky), Metropolitan of Moscow

Saint Macarius (secular name Mikhail Andreyevich Parvitsky-Nevsky; 1835–1926) was Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, renowned as the "Apostle of Altai." Born 1 October 1835 in the village of Shapkino, Vladimir Province, to a poor sexton's family, he volunteered for the Altai Spiritual Mission after seminary, took monastic vows, and spent 36 years as a missionary among the indigenous peoples of the Altai — learning their language, devising an alphabet, translating liturgical texts and Scripture, and founding schools, hospitals, and orphanages.

Consecrated Bishop of Biysk (vicar of the Tomsk diocese) in 1883, he later became Bishop, then Archbishop, of Tomsk from 1891, continuing to oversee the Altai Mission. In 1912 he was elevated to the Moscow see as Metropolitan, serving until 1917, when he was removed amid Synodal and political pressure.

After the revolution he lived in retirement in the village of Kotelniki near Moscow, where he reposed on 16 February 1926. He was glorified at the August 2000 Jubilee Bishops' Council. His relics were transferred to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in 1957.
