Hierarch Theodosius of Chernigov

Saint Theodosius (Uglytsky), Archbishop of Chernigov, was born around the 1630s in Right-Bank Ukraine, reportedly to the noble Polonitsky-Uglytsky family. He was educated at the Kyiv-Bratsky (later Kyiv-Mohyla) college, after which he was tonsured a monk at the Kyiv Caves Lavra, receiving the name Theodosius in honor of St. Theodosius of the Caves. He served as hegumen of the Korsun monastery, then of the Kyiv Vydubychi monastery (from 1664), and as archimandrite of the Chernigov Yeletsky monastery (from 1688), becoming the closest assistant to the aged Archbishop Lazar (Baranovich) of Chernigov. In 1692 he was consecrated Archbishop of Chernigov and granted the rare privilege of serving in the sakkos. He devoted much effort to establishing theological education, laying the foundation of the Chernigov Collegium. He reposed on February 5, 1696, and was buried in the Boris-Gleb Cathedral of Chernigov. His relics were found incorrupt, and after witnessed miracles — including the healing of a peasant girl — a commission of inquiry was convened, culminating in his solemn glorification as a saint on September 9, 1896.
