Forefather Serug

Righteous Serug (Serug/Seruch) is an Old Testament forefather listed in the genealogy from Shem to Abraham (Genesis 11:20–23; 1 Chronicles 1:26; Luke 3:35). Son of Reu and father of Nahor, he was the great-grandfather of the patriarch Abraham. According to the Masoretic text, Serug fathered Nahor at the age of thirty and lived another two hundred years, for a total of 230 years; the Septuagint chronology gives somewhat different figures. He belongs to the line of patriarchs continuing the genealogy from Shem, son of Noah, down to Abraham, and his life is therefore traditionally placed in remote Old Testament antiquity, long before Abraham's calling; the exact dates cannot be reliably fixed and vary between sources. Scripture records no deeds of Serug beyond the genealogical data. The Church commemorates him collectively among the Old Testament righteous ones on the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers, kept on the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ; no separate, fixed feast day is assigned to Serug individually.
