Forefather Seth the Forefather

Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, born after Cain murdered Abel (Gen 4:25). According to Genesis, Adam fathered Seth at age 130 "in his own likeness, after his image" (Gen 5:3), and Seth became the forefather of the godly line of humanity, distinct from Cain's ungodly descendants. He lived 912 years and fathered Enosh, in whose days, according to tradition, men began to call upon the name of the Lord. Through Seth, Enosh, Kenan, and onward to Noah runs the genealogy of the righteous who preserved faith in the one God before the Flood; this line continued through Shem and Abraham, ultimately leading to the Theotokos and Christ — the Evangelist Luke includes Seth in the Savior's genealogy (Luke 3:38). Seth has no individual feast day; the Church commemorates him within two movable feasts — the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers and the Sunday of the Holy Fathers, both kept on Sundays before Nativity — together with Adam, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and other Old Testament righteous who awaited the Savior's coming.
