Righteous Theodore of Ostrov (Oyat)

Venerable Theodore of Ostrov labored in the 16th century as one of the closest disciples of St. Alexander of Svir. Together with five other companions — Ignatius, Leonid, Dionysius, Therapon, and Cornelius — he was tonsured and labored in strict obedience under his spiritual father, and after his repose was buried at the Presentation (Vvedensky) Monastery on the Oyat River (in present-day Leningrad Oblast). Detailed individual biographical facts about each of the six Oyat ascetics have not survived — their lives are known collectively as disciples of St. Alexander of Svir. Local veneration of Theodore developed in the 17th–18th centuries; today he is glorified in the Synaxis of Karelian Saints (established 1974) and the Synaxis of Novgorod Saints.
