Martyr Barachisius (Varakhisiy) of Persia

Martyr Varakhisiy (Barachisius) of Persia suffered together with his brother, the martyr Jonah, around 327–330, during the reign of the Persian king Shapur II (310–379/381), one of the fiercest persecutors of Christians. The brothers lived in a Persian village; learning that confessors of Christ were imprisoned and tortured in a nearby city, they went there to strengthen the sufferers in faith and courage. For this the brothers themselves were seized and brought to trial before Persian princes, who tried to compel them to worship the sun, fire, and water. Refusing idolatry, Jonah and Varakhisiy were tortured separately with great cruelty. Saint Varakhisiy was beaten, had red-hot fetters placed on his hands, molten tin poured into his nose, ears, and mouth, and was bound to a spinning wheel; finally, boiling pitch was poured into his mouth, and he gave up his soul to God.
