Venerable Andrei Rublev

Venerable Andrei Rublev (c. 1360–1428) was the greatest icon painter and fresco master of medieval Russia, a monk of the Andronikov Monastery in Moscow. Nothing is known of his secular name or origins; he took monastic vows probably before 1405. That year he is first mentioned in the chronicles, painting the Annunciation Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin together with Theophanes the Greek and the elder Prochor. In 1408, with the monk Daniel Cherny, he created the frescoes of the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. Between 1425 and 1427 he worked on the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, painting his celebrated "Old Testament Trinity" icon for the iconostasis — the supreme achievement of Russian icon painting. His last known work was the frescoes of the Savior Cathedral at the Andronikov Monastery (1426–1427). He died in Moscow, reputedly of plague. Canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988, marking the millennium of the Baptism of Rus.
