Venerable Dionysius of Glushitsa

St. Dionysius of Glushitsa was born in 1362 near Vologda and baptized Dimitry. He spent nine years as a novice at the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery, where he was tonsured with the name Dionysius and learned the art of icon painting. In 1393 he founded the Svyato-Lukianova Hermitage, and soon after, seeking stricter solitude, withdrew into the dense forests on the Glushitsa River, where he founded the Glushitsky Monastery of the Intercession and became its first abbot. He later founded another monastery, Sosnovets, and helped establish several other communities in the Vologda lands. He was renowned as a skilled iconographer and as teacher to many disciples, including Sts. Tarasius and Theodosius of Glushitsa (already documented in this database). He was known for his particular love of the poor and wandering pilgrims. He reposed on June 1, 1437, and was canonized at the Moscow Council of 1547.
