Righteous Righteous James of Borovichi, Wonderworker of Novgorod

Nothing is reliably known about Righteous James's origin or secular life. According to tradition, during Bright Week (Easter Week) of 1452, the inhabitants of Borovichi (a town on the Msta River, Novgorod land) saw a large ice floe carrying a hollowed-out log coffin with the body of a young man — unusually, the ice floe was moving AGAINST the river's current. The frightened inhabitants tried three times to push the find away from the shore, but the ice floe returned three times. Only then was the body honorably buried by the parish church.

Some time later, healings and other miracles began occurring at the grave, after which, in 1544, by decree of Archbishop Feodosy of Novgorod and with the blessing of Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow, the relics were examined and found incorrupt; on October 23, 1544, their solemn translation took place into the newly built Church of the Holy Spirit at the Holy Spirit Monastery of Borovichi. In 1657, Patriarch Nikon translated most of the relics to the Iversky Monastery on Lake Valdai (where they remain to this day), leaving a portion in Borovichi.

IMPORTANT IDENTITY CORRECTION AND MERGE: a separate entry existed in this database called "Ioasaph of Borovichi" (joasaph_borovichsky), falsely presenting him as "an Indian prince who suffered for Christ" — this is direct contamination from the entirely unrelated medieval legend of Barlaam and Ioasaph (a Christianized retelling of the story of the Buddha, about an Indian prince named "Ioasaph"). No real Russian saint named "Ioasaph of Borovichi" exists — the only genuine, documentarily attested saint connected to Borovichi is Righteous James (above); the joasaph_borovichsky entry has been merged into this one, and its fabricated content has not been reproduced.

ON THE CATEGORY CORRECTION: this entry's original stub listed the category as "venerable," but Righteous James was a layman/youth who did not take monastic vows; in every source checked he is invariably titled "righteous," and in places "blessed." The category has been corrected to righteous.
