Hierarch Jacob I of Serbia

St. Jacob I, Archbishop of Serbia, headed the Serbian Church from early 1286, in the fourth year of King Milutin's reign, governing it for six years. Around 1290 he moved the seat of the Serbian archbishops from the Žiča Monastery to Peć, a landmark event in the history of the Archbishopric (later Patriarchate) of Peć. That same year he translated the relics of St. Eustathius I of Serbia to Peć. He took particular care of Studenica Monastery, providing it with liturgical books and church vessels; contemporaries noted his zeal for faith and piety. He died on February 3, 1292. He is venerated within the Assembly (Sobor) of Serbian Hierarchs; a fresco portrait of him survives at Orahovica Monastery. The principal source on his life is the expanded redaction of the "Lives of the Serbian Kings and Archbishops," compiled by Archbishop Daniel II.
