Venerable Longinus the Gatekeeper of the Kiev Caves

XIII — XIV век

Venerable Longinus the Gatekeeper (13th–14th c.) — gatekeeper of the Kiev Caves Monastery, who discerned visitors' thoughts before they crossed the threshold.

Venerable Longinus the Gatekeeper labored at the Kiev Caves Monastery in the 13th–14th centuries as porter and guardian of the gates. The Kiev Caves Paterikon calls him "a father of great holiness and obedience." For his virtue the Lord granted him clairvoyance: he discerned the thoughts of those approaching the monastery before they crossed the threshold, perceiving their intentions on entering and leaving. He rebuked the ill-intentioned and strengthened the pious. He reposed in old age and was buried in the Far (Theodosian) Caves, where his incorrupt relics rest. Venerated in the Synaxis of the Far Caves Fathers. Feast: October 16/29.
