Venerable Longinus of Koryazhma

Venerable Longinus of Koryazhma was a 16th-century Russian ascetic, founder of the St. Nicholas Koryazhma Monastery near Solvychegodsk. No precise details survive of his origin. Settling at the confluence of the Koryazhemka and Vychegda rivers, he gathered brethren around him; in 1535 a church of St. Nicholas was raised and a monastery established, with Longinus as hegumen. Known for deep humility, he reposed in old age on February 10, 1540, asking to be buried at the church entrance so all who entered would tread over his grave. Sixteen years later, in 1556, his relics were moved inside the church. He became known for gracious help to those at his tomb. Feast: February 10/23.
