Venerable Macarius of Kalyazin

Venerable Macarius of Kalyazin (secular name Matthew Vasilyevich Kozhin) was born in 1402 near Kashin, brother of Bishop Gennadius of Tver and uncle of Venerable Paisius of Uglich. Widowed at 21, he gave away his estate and was tonsured at the Klobukov Monastery. He withdrew to the Volga bank, where brethren gathered; thus arose the Trinity Kalyazin Monastery, of which he became hegumen. He reposed on March 17, 1483, aged about 81. His relics were found incorrupt on May 26, 1521, and became renowned for miracles. Venerated in the Synaxis of Tver Saints. Feast: March 17/30, May 26/June 8.
