Venerable Sergius of Obnora (Nurma)

Venerable Sergius of Obnora (also of Nurma) was Greek by birth and began monastic life on Mount Athos before coming to Russia and joining the Trinity Monastery brotherhood under St. Sergius of Radonezh. Seeking strict silence, he withdrew into the Vologda forests, settling on the Nurma River, and founded the Transfiguration Monastery. Nearby lived St. Paul of Obnora, with whom Sergius kept close spiritual friendship. His Life was composed in 1584 by Abbot Jonah of Glushitsy; formal veneration began in 1546. He reposed in old age on October 7, 1412.
