Venerable Symeon of the Wondrous Mountain (the Younger Stylite)

521 — 592

Venerable Symeon of the Wondrous Mountain (521–592) — a Syrian stylite, spiritual guide of Antioch, who foretold earthquakes.

Venerable Symeon of the Wondrous Mountain was born in 521 in Antioch. From childhood he embraced strict asceticism. As a youth he withdrew by divine command to a hill near Daphne, later called the Wondrous Mountain, where Christ appeared to him. He mounted a pillar and spent decades in fasting and prayer, gathering a monastic community around him. Renowned for clairvoyance and healing, he repeatedly predicted earthquakes, saving Antioch. He reposed on May 24, 592.
