Venerable Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022) — the foremost Byzantine mystic, teacher of the vision of the Uncreated Light, author of the "Hymns of Divine Love."
Venerable Symeon the New Theologian was born in 949 in Galatia, came to Constantinople, entered the Studios Monastery, then St. Mamas', becoming its abbot. His spiritual father was Symeon the Studite, whose veneration led to controversy and temporary exile for the theologian. Symeon is among the greatest mystical writers of the Christian East, author of the "Hymns of Divine Love" and catechetical discourses, teaching the contemplative vision of the Uncreated Light. Alongside John the Evangelist and Gregory Nazianzen, he is one of only three saints titled "the Theologian." He reposed March 12, 1022.
