Hierarch Theodore (Theodulus) of Octodurum

Saint Theodore (Theodulus) of Octodurum was the first historically attested bishop of Octodurum (present-day Martigny; the see later moved to Sion, Valais, Switzerland), venerated as patron of that Alpine region. He is believed to have become bishop in the 340s and to have governed the see for over forty years. His name appears among attendees of the Council of Aquileia (381), and in 390 he signed a letter of the Synod of Milan to Pope Siricius condemning the teachings of the monk Jovinian. Tradition credits him with discovering the relics of the martyr Maurice and the Theban Legion, on whose burial site he founded the celebrated Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. No further record survives, and he is believed to have died around 391. He is venerated as patron of the Valais and the Walser people.
