Venerable Tryphon of Vyatka

Venerable Tryphon of Vyatka (secular name Trofim Dmitrievich Podvizaev) was born in 1546 in the village of Malaya Nemnyuzhka, Pinega district. He was tonsured at the Pyskorsky Monastery on the Kama River. He carried out missionary work among the Ostyaks and Voguls, opposing pagan shrines. He founded monasteries on the Chusovaya River, and in 1580 the Dormition Monastery in Khlynov (Vyatka). He wore chains and a hairshirt, living a severe ascetic life. He endured conflict with the brotherhood of his own monastery, which forced him to temporarily leave it. He reposed on October 8, 1612. His relics were found incorrupt in 1684. He was canonized in 1903.
