Hierarch Ulrich of Augsburg

St. Ulrich of Augsburg was educated at the Abbey of St. Gall under his uncle, Bishop Adalbero. From 923 he held the see of Augsburg. In 955, when Magyar forces besieged Augsburg, he personally led the city's defense, bolstering the defenders' spirits; soon the army of Emperor Otto I arrived and crushed the Magyars in the decisive Battle of Lechfeld (August 10, 955), ending their raids on Western Europe. He died on July 4, 973, lying, by tradition, on ashes arranged in the shape of a cross. In 993 Pope John XV canonized Ulrich — the first formal papal canonization in history.
