Hierarch Vitalian of Capua

St. Vitalian, the 25th bishop of Capua, is a figure distinct from Pope Vitalian (654–672) and from St. Vitalian of Osimo, known chiefly from a later (12th-century) legendary Life preserved in a Beneventan codex. According to tradition, he was falsely accused through a clothing-swap trick, fled toward Rome, was sewn into a leather sack and thrown into the sea near Sinuessa, but miraculously survived to reach shore at Ostia. He spent his final years at Montevergine Abbey, where he reposed in 699. The historicity of the Life's details is disputed — he is absent from the oldest Capuan calendar — though his episcopal service itself is independently attested.
