Hierarch

Hierarch Erhard of Regensburg

VII — VIII век

St. Erhard of Regensburg (7th-8th c.) — an itinerant missionary bishop, patron of Regensburg, known for baptizing St. Odilia of Alsace.

St. Erhard was an itinerant missionary bishop who labored at the turn of the 7th-8th centuries in the region of Bavaria and Alsace. According to tradition he came from Ireland or Aquitaine and led the life of a wandering preacher-"chorepiscopus" without a fixed see, a common form of ministry of the time in lands not yet fully organized ecclesiastically. He is best known for baptizing the future St. Odilia of Alsace, who was born blind — according to tradition, the rite of baptism was miraculously accompanied by the restoration of her sight. He spent his final years in Regensburg, where he is venerated as one of the city's patrons. His exact dates are not established.
