Venerable Zeno the Hermit (4th-5th c.) — a disciple of St. Silvanus, a hermit whose sayings are preserved in the Paterikon tradition.
Venerable Zeno the Hermit labored in the 4th-5th centuries in the Egyptian desert as a disciple of Abba Silvanus. He led a strict eremitic life apart from people, distinguished by deep humility and discernment. Several of his brief instructive sayings on prayer, the struggle against thoughts, and ascetic discipline are preserved in the collection of the "Sayings of the Desert Fathers" (Apophthegmata Patrum), a compilation that formed the foundation of the Eastern Christian ascetic tradition. His exact dates are not established.
