Righteous Veronica (the Woman with the Issue of Blood)

Righteous Veronica is, according to church tradition, the name given to the Gospel "woman with an issue of blood," who, having suffered for twelve years from an incurable hemorrhage, touched the hem of Christ's garment in faith and was immediately healed (Matt. 9:20-22; Mark 5:25-34; Luke 8:43-48). A later church tradition, recorded by Eusebius of Caesarea, identifies her as a resident of Caesarea Philippi (Paneas) and reports that in gratitude for her healing she erected a bronze statuary group at the gate of her house depicting the scene of the healing, which, according to Eusebius, survived to his own time (4th century). In the Western tradition, the same name (Veronica) later became associated with a separate legend of a cloth bearing the imprint of Christ's face on the road to Golgotha — a distinct story that Orthodox tradition does not conflate with that of the woman with the issue of blood.
