Apostle Aristobulus of the Seventy, Bishop of Britain — a native of Cyprus, brother of Apostle Barnabas, who accompanied Apostles Paul and Barnabas on their journeys; he was sent by Paul to preach in Britain, where he converted many to Christ and suffered persecution from pagans.
Apostle Aristobulus of the Seventy was born on the island of Cyprus, brother of Apostle Barnabas. He accompanied Apostle Paul (mentioned in Romans 16:10: "Greet them which are of Aristobulus' household") and Barnabas on their apostolic journeys. He was made a bishop by Apostle Paul and sent to preach the Gospel in Britain, where, according to tradition, he converted many pagans to Christ, suffered persecution for his missionary work, and died in Britain. His name survives in the Welsh locality of Arwystli (Montgomeryshire), where he is venerated as "Old Arwystli." His memory is kept on March 16/29 (primary), as well as October 31/November 13 and January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
