Martyr
Martyr Valeria (Caleria) of Caesarea
† между 284 и 305
Also known as: Калерия (Валерия) Кесарийская, Валерия Кесарийская, Калерия Палестинская
A Christian virgin of Caesarea in Palestine who suffered with Kyriakia and Mary under Diocletian. Her original name is Valeria; the form Caleria arose in the Russian translation of the Prologue.
The holy martyrs Valeria (Caleria in the Russian tradition), Kyriakia and Mary lived in Caesarea in Palestine during the persecution under Diocletian (284–305). Having accepted the Christian faith, they withdrew to a solitary place to live in fasting and prayer, asking God to end the persecution. When the governor ordered them to worship idols, they refused and confessed Christ, and died under torture.
A short Life of the martyrs under 6 June is found in the Menologion of Basil II and the Synaxarion of Constantinople. The name Caleria in place of Valeria appeared in the Russian translation of the Prologue, whose second redaction moved the feast from 6 to 7 June; under that date it entered the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church (20 June, new style).
