Martyr
Martyr Diomedes
† нач. II в.
Also known as: Диомед, Мч. Диомид (память 3 июля)
An early 2nd-century martyr commemorated on 3 July together with the martyrs Eulampius, Asclepiodotus and Golinduch. Not to be confused with St Diomedes the physician (16 August).
St Diomedes is known only from brief entries in ancient church calendars. With the martyrs Eulampius, Asclepiodotus and Golinduch he is listed under 3 July in the Typikon of the Great Church (9th–10th c.) and the Synaxarion of Constantinople. Because these saints are said to have suffered together with the Roman martyr Hyacinth, their martyrdom is dated to the reign of Emperor Trajan (98–117); the Orthodox Encyclopedia names Rome as the place of execution. Greek verse synaxaria, which list them under 30 June, say that Diomedes came from Tarsus and was beheaded. He is distinct from St Diomedes the physician (16 August). His feast is 3 July (16 July, new style).
