Righteous Pope Domnus I of Rome

Domnus I (Donnus I) — Pope of Rome, who occupied the see from November 2, 676 to April 11, 678, in the pre-schism era of unity between the Eastern and Western Churches; he conducted negotiations to end the schism with the Ravenna archbishopric and combated Nestorianism discovered in a Roman Syrian monastery. His historical existence is confirmed, but no separate day of liturgical veneration could be found in the modern Orthodox calendar — the card is hidden from the calendar pending a reliable source on his ecclesiastical glorification.
Domnus I was born in Rome; details of his early life are little known. He occupied the papal throne from November 2, 676 to April 11, 678 — in an era when the unified Church had not yet been divided by the schism of 1054. During his brief pontificate he conducted active negotiations to end the schism with the Ravenna archbishopric and combated heresies within Rome under his authority; during his tenure a colony of Nestorian monks was discovered in a Syrian monastery in Rome (Monasterium Boetianum). He was buried in St. Peter's Basilica, whose repairs he oversaw; by his order the atrium of the basilica was paved with large slabs of white marble. Despite the historical authenticity of the figure and his belonging to the pre-schism era, no authoritative Orthodox sources confirming his separate liturgical veneration with an established feast day could be found.
