Apostle of the Seventy Apellius (Apelles) — mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans ("greet Apelles, approved in Christ," Romans 16:10); according to church tradition, he became bishop of the city of Heraclea in Thrace.
The holy Apostle of the Seventy Apellius (in the Greek text of the New Testament, Apelles) is mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the closing greetings of the Epistle to the Romans: "Greet Apelles, approved in Christ" (Romans 16:10). This apostolic testimony itself indicates that Apellius was known to the Roman Christian community as a steadfast and proven Christian. According to church tradition, he was later made bishop of the city of Heraclea in Thrace, where he labored zealously to establish the Christian faith among his flock. His memory is kept in the Synaxis of the 70 Apostles on January 4, and separately on October 31/November 13.
