Apostle of the Seventy Erastus — a disciple of the Apostle Paul, he served as a deacon and city treasurer (steward) of the Church of Jerusalem, mentioned in the Epistle to the Romans (Romans 16:23); he later became bishop of the city of Paneas in Palestine and was granted a peaceful death by the Lord.
The holy Apostle of the Seventy Erastus was a disciple of the Apostle Paul. He initially served as a deacon and treasurer (steward) of the Church of Jerusalem — in the closing greetings of the Epistle to the Romans, the Apostle Paul calls Erastus the city treasurer (Romans 16:23). St. Erastus was later made bishop of the city of Paneas in Palestine (at the source of the Jordan River), where he labored zealously to establish the Christian faith among his flock. He was granted a peaceful, non-martyric death by the Lord. His memory is kept in the Synaxis of the 70 Apostles on January 4, and separately on November 10/23.
