The commemoration of the 150 bishops who gathered in Constantinople in 381 for the Second Ecumenical Council, which condemned the heresy of Macedonius and completed the Nicene Creed as the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed.
The Second Ecumenical Council (First Council of Constantinople) was convened by Emperor Theodosius I the Great in Constantinople in May 381 and completed the victory of Orthodoxy over Arianism begun at Nicaea in 325. It was attended by 150 Orthodox bishops of the East, among them Saints Meletius of Antioch, Gregory the Theologian, Cyril of Jerusalem, Gregory of Nyssa and Amphilochius of Iconium. Its presidents were in turn Meletius, who died during the Council, Gregory the Theologian, who withdrew for the sake of peace, and Nectarius, the new archbishop of Constantinople.
The Fathers rejected the teaching of Macedonius, who denied the divinity of the Holy Spirit, confirmed the Nicene faith against Arians and other heretics, and added to the Nicene Creed the articles on the Holy Spirit, the Church, Baptism and the life to come — the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, once called "the faith of the 150 Fathers". Emperor Theodosius ratified its decrees on 19 July 381. The Russian Church commemorates the Fathers of this Council on 22 May (4 June).
