Gregory II — Pope of Rome from 715 to 731, who opposed Emperor Leo III the Isaurian's iconoclast edict (726); a real historical figure of the early Iconoclast controversy, but his veneration as a saint in the Orthodox Church is not confirmed by any source — pravenc.ru attributes his commemoration exclusively to the Western calendar.
Gregory II held the papal see in Rome from 715 to 731. He is known above all for his firm opposition to Emperor Leo III the Isaurian's iconoclast edict, issued in 726: he convened a synod in Rome that condemned iconoclasm, defended the independence of church doctrine from imperial dictate, and upheld the canonical dignity of episcopal authority against imperial overreach. He survived several assassination attempts organized by Byzantine governors in Italy. He is also known for sponsoring St. Boniface's mission in the German lands.
IMPORTANT CAVEAT: despite his significant role in defending icon veneration, Gregory II's veneration as a saint in the Orthodox Church is NOT CONFIRMED — neither azbyka.ru/days nor days.pravoslavie.ru carries a dedicated article on him (by contrast, St. Gregory I "Dvoeslov" [the Great], who is genuinely venerated in Orthodoxy, has a full azbyka.ru/days entry); pravenc.ru explicitly designates his commemoration as "Western." The entry's original structured dates (6 dates in January-March) constituted contamination — all six exactly match dates found on other entries in the database and apparently include the genuine feast of St. Gregory I Dvoeslov (Mar 12/25), which "leaked" onto this record due to name similarity; removed as unreliable.
