Hieromartyr

Hieromartyr Amos Ivanov

† 1919

Also known as: Амос Иванович Иванов, Сщмч. Амос пресвитер (†1919)

Priest of the village of Vakhrushevo in the Kansk district of Yenisei province, killed in 1919 during the Civil War; glorified in 2000.

Very little is known of Hieromartyr Amos Ivanov. In 1887–1892 he is mentioned as acting reader at the church of the village of Mikhalevskoye in the Kansk district of the Yenisei diocese, and in the early 1910s as deacon of St Nicholas church in the village of Antsirskoye.

Later ordained priest, he served at the Protection church of the settlers' village of Vakhrushevo, Taseyevo volost, Kansk district, Yenisei province. From December 1918 the north-east of the Kansk district was engulfed by a Red partisan uprising. In March 1919 rumours reached the diocese that Fr Amos had been killed, but a report of June 1919 stated that he was alive until the Bolsheviks retreated before Kolchak's forces in early summer. In the autumn the Bolsheviks returned and took reprisals against many local people, evidently including Fr Amos. The exact date and circumstances of his death are unknown.

He was glorified among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia by the Bishops' Council of 2000. He is commemorated on 15/28 June, the feast of his patron, the Prophet Amos, and in the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church.
