Hieromartyr Arcadius Garyaev

1878 — 14 июля 1918

Also known as: Сщмч. Аркадий, пресвитер (†1918), Аркадий Николаевич Гаряев, Аркадий Боровский

A Ural parish priest and former missionary among the Mansi, killed by Red Guards in July 1918 while celebrating a wedding in the church of Borovskoye.

Hieromartyr Arcadius Garyaev was born in 1878 (or 1877) at the Verkhne-Turinsky works in Perm Province into the family of a priest of Hungarian descent. Poor health forced him to leave the Perm seminary; he served as a reader and, from 1905, as a deacon, and in 1907 was ordained priest for the village of Petropavlovskoye. In 1910 he became a missionary priest of a travelling church among the Vogul (Mansi) people, but later asked to be transferred for health reasons, and in 1914 was appointed to St Nicholas church in the village of Borovskoye (now Kurgan Region).

On July 1/14, 1918, during the Civil War in the Urals, while he was celebrating a wedding, Red Guards entered the church, accused him of counter-revolution, led him away and killed him with bayonets, throwing his body into a pit for dead cattle. After they left, his body was recovered and buried by his church. He was canonized among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia by the Holy Synod on July 17, 2002; his relics were uncovered in 2007 and rest in the convent of the Praise of the Mother of God at Borovskoye. His feast is July 1 (July 14 New Style).
