Hieromartyr Hermogenes (Georgy Efremovich Dolganev), Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia — a committed monarchist who openly opposed Bolshevik rule, drowned by the Bolsheviks in a river near the village of Pokrovskoye (Grigori Rasputin's home village) on June 16/29, 1918, with an icon tied to his body as a weight; canonized among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 2000. NOT to be confused with Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow (1530-1612), an entirely different, 17th-century saint.
The Hieromartyr Hermogenes was born on April 25/May 7 (N.S.), 1858, as Georgy Efremovich Dolganev. From 1903 to 1912 he held the see of Saratov, and from 1917 he was Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia; a committed monarchist, he openly opposed the Bolshevik regime after the revolution.
He was arrested by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Before his execution he was subjected to a mocking ritual; he was drowned (sources vary — in the Tura, Tobol, or Irtysh river, near the village of Pokrovskoye, Grigori Rasputin's home village) on the night of June 16/29, 1918; a large icon was tied to the bishop's body as a weight.
He was canonized by the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000, among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He is also commemorated on August 20/September 2 and November 5/18 as one of the fathers of the 1917-1918 Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
IMPORTANT CORRECTION: the original entry contained a serious contamination — the life dates "c. 1530-1612" and feast_days (May 12/25, February 17) exactly matched the data of an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT saint — Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow (processed separately under the slug "hermogenes"), killed by the Poles during the Time of Troubles. This is a classic name-substring collision bug on "Hermogenes." The correct dates for Bishop Hermogenes of Tobolsk (Dolganev) are 1858-1918, commemorated June 16/29.
