Hierarch Jonah, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia

Hierarch Jonah (secular name Iona Odnoush/Odnoushev) was born in the last quarter of the 14th century near Soligalich, in the Principality of Galich. In his youth he took monastic vows, laboring at Moscow's Simonov Monastery. From 1431/1437 he was Bishop of Ryazan and Murom.

On December 15, 1448, a council of Russian bishops in Moscow elected and consecrated him Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia — for the first time in history without prior sanction from the Patriarch of Constantinople. This event followed Metropolitan Isidore's acceptance of the Union of Florence and his subsequent deposition, and effectively marked the beginning of the independent (autocephalous) existence of the Russian Church.

He reposed on March 31, 1461. His relics were found incorrupt in 1472. He was canonized church-wide at the Moscow (Makarian) Council of 1547.

IMPORTANT CONTAMINATION CORRECTION: the original stub erroneously listed "era: BC" and a date of "8th century BC" (the same contamination from the Old Testament Prophet Jonah found and corrected throughout this entire batch's namesake cluster — jonah_of_mirozh, jonah_of_odessa, jonah_of_pertominsk, jona_yarengsky). The date in the feast_days field ("September 22/October 5") was likewise established as belonging exclusively to the Old Testament Prophet Jonah — it does not correspond to either the hierarch's personal commemoration or the Synaxis of Moscow Hierarchs' date (which actually falls on October 5/18, not September 22/October 5). The commemoration dates have been corrected to the true three: March 31/April 13, May 27/June 9, and June 15/28, which were already present in the stub's own text.
