Wife of Prince Simeon of Vyazma, murdered in Torzhok in 1406/07 by Prince Yury Svyatoslavich for refusing his advances and remaining faithful to her husband.
Saint Juliana, Princess of Vyazma and Torzhok, was the wife of Prince Simeon Mstislavich of Vyazma. Nothing reliable is known of her origin; the 19th-century story of her birth in Torzhok is a late legend.
After Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania seized Smolensk in 1404, its former prince Yury (George) Svyatoslavich received the town of Torzhok from Grand Prince Vasily I of Moscow, and Prince Simeon apparently shared the town. There, in 1406/07, Yury tried to take Juliana by force. Faithful to her husband, she struck him with a knife; he survived, killed Simeon, and had Juliana's hands and feet cut off and her body thrown into the river Tvertsa. Yury fled to the Horde and later died at the Venev monastery; the Tale speaks of his repentance.
According to her Life, her body was found in spring 1407 and buried in the Transfiguration Cathedral of Torzhok, with healings at the grave. Her relics were uncovered in 1815; on 2 June 1819 a chapel in her honour was consecrated in the new cathedral. Their whereabouts have been unknown since the cathedral was closed in 1930. She is commemorated on 21 December (3 January) and 2 (15) June, and in the Synaxes of the Saints of Tver and Smolensk.
