Hierarch Gaudentius, Bishop of Brescia — a collector of relics of many saints, unanimously elected Bishop of Brescia in 387 by St. Ambrose of Milan, an advocate for St. John Chrysostom before the emperor, who died peacefully around 410.
Gaudentius was born in Brescia (ancient Brixia) around 360. He became a monk in Caesarea of Cappadocia and traveled to Jerusalem, gathering relics of saints, including a portion of the relics of John the Baptist and the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste.
After Bishop Philastrius died in 387, the people of Brescia elected Gaudentius as their bishop despite his initial reluctance; he was consecrated by St. Ambrose of Milan. He built a basilica (later called the Cathedral of the Holy Ones) to house the relics he had collected.
In 405–406 he served as papal legate, pleading with Emperor Arcadius on behalf of St. John Chrysostom. Twenty-one of his sermons survive; he died around 410 and was buried in the church he founded.
His feast is kept on October 25.
