Third-century martyrs of Corinth: the physician Quadratus and his disciples Cyprian, Dionysius, Anectus, Paul and Crescens, beheaded under Decius and Valerian.
The Martyr Quadratus (Codratus) of Corinth and his companions Cyprian, Dionysius, Anectus, Paul and Crescens were beheaded at Corinth in the 250s, during the persecution of the emperors Decius and Valerian (the Russian calendar gives 258).
According to the earliest Greek Passion, Quadratus was born near Corinth and orphaned in infancy; by God's providence a cloud came down from heaven to feed him. Grown up, he studied medicine in Corinth. A zealous Christian, he was the first victim of the prefect Jason, who tortured him and tried in vain to turn his disciples from Christ. The martyrs were led outside the city walls and beheaded, and a spring that became a place of pilgrimage opened where they died.
In the 14th century Nikephoros Gregoras added that the martyrs were hung by the feet, tormented with iron and fire and thrown to wild beasts that would not touch them. The Russian Menologion of 10 (23) March also names with Quadratus the other Corinthian martyrs — Victorinus and his companions, and Leonides with seven virgins. Quadratus of Corinth should not be confused with Quadratus of Nicomedia, commemorated on the same day.
